What I Learned on My Summer Vacation

· I should not have broken my vow to never again fly United Airlines. You know they break guitars, right?

· The Iliad is phenomenal, though not nearly as good as The Odyssey. Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union, which I've been meaning to read for a long time, is fantastic so far. I'm reading Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad next.

· New York City is smellier and hotter than I remember.

· Rayne Summers has figured out how to save the book industry!

· I don't really "tan." I mostly just turn red and then white again. I may have known this already.

· It is possible to play Plants vs. Zombies for an entire six-hour flight. If you haven't yet played it and are looking for a distraction, you can play a free online demo here. Make sure you finish your writing first!

  1. Plants vs. Zombies is amazing, but really way too addicting. I've finished the entire game twice now... It's not really compatible with writing :p

    Welcome back!

  2. I broke my rule to never fly United only once and they screwed me a second time. Never again. I'll fly Southwest. I'll fly Jet Blue. I seem to be the only one with good luck flying US Airways but United had to go and screw that up. Northwestern/KLM wasn't so bad flying to Europe for work, but I've never flown NWern domestically.

  3. I'll second Southwest and JetBlue. Lufthansa is supposed to be fabulous for international travel but I've yet to fly with them.

  5. I love the Iliad! Probably more than the Odyssey. If you like Greek classics and don't mind reading plays, check out Agamemnon and the rest of the Oresteia. I personally prefer the Ted Hughes translation, but they're all good.
