Prithee, Inform Me: What Genre Do You Read Most?

NB: Mea culpa, dear readers. The second science fiction button is, indeed, supposed to be YA/Children's; unfortunately, I can't fix the poll without erasing the voting up to this point. I know it's lame, but if we could treat Sci-Fi #2 as Children's/YA, we might be able to get (mostly) correct numbers anyway. Sorry for the confusion! — E

Happy Monday (and happy May), gentle readers! It's been awhile since I've visited genre/category sales (see Genre Sales, Parts 1 – 8 under "The Essential PMN"), so I thought I'd gather some preliminary info with an info(rmal) poll.

  1. I'm a combo girl. Sci-fi, fantasy, women's fic, and young adult... mainly. I've also been known to read historical fiction and mystery, on occasion.

  2. Science Fiction is listed twice! And still has 0 votes. Poor Science Fiction.

  3. Did you mean to leave off YA as its own category, or did science fiction eat its radio button?

  4. Mostly fantasy, but I'll read any genre.

  5. Fantasy then nonfiction Biographies then historical fiction and science fiction tied. But Fantasy trumps them all by a significant margin.

  6. I read everything there except chick lit & romance. And I also read a lot of non fiction.

  7. I read mostly literary fiction and women's fiction. My second "tier" is science fiction, mystery, and historical fiction.

  8. I end up reading historical fiction and classics almost exclusively. I'm obsessed with Victorian fiction and the more I can get my hands on, the better. I usually find the language delightful and rich, like a great big comfy pillow of words. :)

  9. Since most people who visit your blog appear to be writers, it would be interesting to compare what writers read to what the average non-writing reader reads.

  10. I chose "other."

I devour memoirs the way most people do fiction--I wish they weren't lumped in with nonfic as if they somehow had more in common with cookbooks and self-helps! They're STORIES, darn it, and all the more interesting because they're true.

  11. I chose other, because I read "spec fic" which is basically sci-fi plus fantasy, and there's no way I could pick between them.

But I read a lot in other genres as well.

  12. Young Adult! Pretty much anything within that genre: sci-fi/futuristic, fantasy, romance, paranormal, historical, contemporary, I love it all.

  13. This is kinda not fair. I voted fantasy, because it is my favorite, but I read several different genre's. Some you don't have listed here, which must make them sub-genre's.

  14. I mainly read anything YA that involves romance and some hint of the supernatural thrown in.
