It's been awhile since I've run a poll, and since 1.) I've noticed several new followers as of late, and 2.) I'm gearing up for another round of genre-specific sales smackdowns, I figured I'd offer you, gentle readers, the following poll:

Awesome! The genre-specific sales series was actually what first brought me here last year. Glad you're doing it again soon. Minor note: I clicked on SF/F because that's what I mainly write, but I also write Women's Fiction. It wouldn't allow me to choose more than one, so just an FYI.
Thank you for putting women's fic and chick lit together so I didn't have to choose or once again debate with myself whether "chick lit" is derogatory or not...
Mine's actually historical romantic suspense, but I just stuck it under romance. Looks like your audience is mostly Children/YA, and SFF, likely because they followed you here from Nathan's blog, and Nathan doesn't rep romance, so most of us romance folks follow other blogs. But I like Nathan's for the industry info, same as this one. I mostly lurk.
I'm writing science fiction. My co-author and I are on book 3 of a planned trilogy and we're having a great time with it. Now if we can only get a publisher interested.....
I wasn't sure what a book with superheroes in it would fall under so I went with "Other." I probably would have picked "Horror" or "Adventure" if they'd been available, though.
@jdkaope ummmm....historical fiction with an erotic twist? that sounds AWESOME. It reminds me of hetalia, which is this japanese anime reimagining WWII countries as cute little men with crushes on each other. but yeah....
I'm an "other" - but I want commercial fiction or, ideally, humor that is fiction. Is there such a beast? I'm writing one, but darned if it ain't difficult to find humor as a category that's not non-fiction.
Wow! Lots of YA. I guess the Twilight craze is still being chased (first it was Harry Potter...). That seems to be the only genre that lights up that way, although Dan Brown seems to do a pretty good job too!
My name is Eric, and I work in the sales department of a publishing house. There are a lot of blogs out there that cover the agenting and editorial aspects of book publishing, but here you'll find out what happens to your book after it's been acquired.
On Fridays, recovering publishing insider Laura writes round-ups. She also posts over on Combreviations.

Eric,
ReplyDeleteI am an "other"...historical fiction.

Suburban Noir meets Psychological Suspense.

I'm an other too, Young Adult Fantasy of the secondary world variety.
ReplyDeleteI am also a historical fiction other, but with an erotic twist. Things like what if Churchill had lost the war, and been sexually attracted to Hitler.
ReplyDeleteI tried to vote but it said I couldn't connect to the server. I write YA/Children's.
ReplyDeleteBy "Other" I mean historical fiction...
ReplyDeleteThank you for putting women's fic and chick lit together so I didn't have to choose or once again debate with myself whether "chick lit" is derogatory or not...
ReplyDeleteSoliciting a contemporary fantasy, writing a classic fantasy, have an epic fantasy on deck.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what genre it is. I've got a manuscript about love, art school, vampires, and the Holocaust. You have to write what you know.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't allow me to choose more than one, so just an FYI.
ReplyDeleteWork from home India
When you do genre sales, I would love, love, love to see Children's broken down by genre (MG SF, MG Fantasy, etc).
ReplyDeleteThanks!!

The draft I'm writing is mainstream fiction. The novel I'm editing is Christian women's fiction (but not a romance).
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the poll only lets us choose one option. What about those of us writing in sf, mystery, and YA?
ReplyDelete@maryles: Yes, but the realities of marketing are that you also have to choose a category...
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure what a book with superheroes in it would fall under so I went with "Other." I probably would have picked "Horror" or "Adventure" if they'd been available, though.

ReplyDeleteMy "other" is literary Gothic. Sort of a modern "Wuthering Heights".
ReplyDeleteI'm an other: historical fiction, 6th century CE in Italy.
ReplyDeleteI selected fantasy/sci-fi, but I write YA fantasy, some of it contemporary, and some of it twisted retellings of old fairy tales.
ReplyDeleteI agree with commenter Susan Quinn, who begged for a full genre breakdown of sales in YA and MG novels--historical, romance, fantasy, etc. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteAnother "other" here. Literary nonfiction.
ReplyDelete'Other' - paranormal romance/urban fantasy.
ReplyDeleteOther = horror.
