Books > Diamonds

Okay, this one's kind of a stretch. Books may be generally less expensive, less shiny, and less physically enduring than diamonds, but since I won't have another opportunity to mention Valentine's Day before it shatters the hearts of the lonely unites the hearts of couples around the globe (or at least the country) this Sunday, I figured I'd make my case for books = gifts now.

I think buying any book your boyfriend / girlfriend / husband / wife / mistress / mister(?) / favorite prostitute (male or female) would enjoy is a great idea for Valentine's Day, though there are a few books that are specific to the holiday. as I've said before, buying someone a book is a great way to show them you care and know something about them without having to make something yourself or go totally broke.

So, while I humbly submit that books are The One True Gift this coming weekend, I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you, dear readers, what you plan to be up to. Me? I'm going to eat my weight in Necco candy hearts and re-read Cat's Cradle.

  1. Normally, I boycot Valentine's Day in favor of year round giving. With your theory, what does this translate into? More books...

  2. I'm not a huge vday person, but giving books is an awesome idea. That's something I'd love to receive! Two friends and I exchange books every year for Christmas, and they're always some of my favorite gifts.

  3. It is tradition that every year for Christmas, my husband gives me a new book and a new journal. No matter what other gifts I receive, these always are the most special to me.

Perhaps it's a tradition that should be carried over to VDay as well. I'll tell him you said so...

  4. I don't believe in V-Day -- my hubby and I prefer to celebrate it every day of the year instead of just one. It's way more fun that way! Anyway, books are the best gifts ever -- to give and get. You can never have enough books! :)

  5. My husband and I have a tradition of getting some champagne and watching V for Vendetta together :).

If we ever do decide to give gifts for V Day, this is an AWESOME idea! I'll spread the word!

  6. Neither my wife nor I celebrate Valentine's Day, so I'll do the same thing I do every day.

...try to take over the world!

  7. I totally agree. All i ever want as a gift is a book of some sort. Maybe I should e-mail this post to my husband?

  9. We'll be spending Valentine's at home, but we are going out for a fancy dinner the night before. Probably spending lots of time reading.

  10. I'm with you on this one. In fact, for me, the best thing any one can EVER give me is a book, or a gift certificate to a book store. When I run out of books or other reading material, I've been known to read hairspray cans. That's just sad.

As to what my husband and I will be doing for Valentines day, most likely playing WOW. I know, I know, but we enjoy it.

  11. My husband and I don't celebrate V-Day either.

As for the list of Valentine books - The Texts From Last Night: All the Texts no one Remembers Sending - sounds good. Tiger might like that one. But, Marry Him: The Case For Settling for Mr. Good Enough. I don't think Id give that to anyone, Valentine's Day or not:(

  12. Terri-with-an-i, I'm with you on the hairspray cans. There's something really soothing about reading words that literally have no connotations (to me, at least). ...Weird? What?

  13. I think giving a book as a gift is one of the most romantic things possible! Of course, it has to be a book that holds meaning to the giver. Add a personal inscription, wow! That would put me over the moon.
I know of couples that read to each other before bed. Yikes. That seems to be just incredibly intimate and lovely.
A particular book? Can't think of one. But if Viggo Mortensen were to show up with a copy of Leaves of Grass with a personal inscription, let's just say chocolate is not required! LOL

  14. We don't do Valentine's Day either. Our wedding anniversary is the 19th, and this year marks our 10th. Yay! But since we don't really have $$$ to do anything big this year, I might just take you up on the "books equals gifts" thing.

  15. Me, I love celebrating the gruesome torture and mutilation-death of a Catholic saint. Valentine's Day celebrations for everyone!

I'm planning to go to midnight mass drunk. Yay!

  16. I'll be on my last day of reviewing a copyedit, for which my deadline is Monday. (But I'm single, so hanging out at a coffeehouse pretending to be all cool and author-like ain't a bad way to spend the day. And the coffeeboy is cuuuuute.) ;) Happy Valentine's Day, all!

  17. Oh, oh, oh! Terry-with-a-Y, that book (Texts From Last Night) is screaming AWESOME (yes, I'm really yelling...it's that funny). Please indulge. The only bad thing is that your husband will either a) read over your shoulder the whole time, or b) one of you will have to read it out loud, or even c) you'll need two of them because nobody wants to share.

    Hilarity ensues. I promise.
