Prithee, Inform Me: Return of the E-reader

The last time I polled you on your e-reading habits in June, 42% of you indicated you owned an e-reader and 58% of you said you didn't. With Christmas come and gone and a variety of new and improved readers on the market, I thought I'd revisit the question.

  1. I just bought my second one, a NOOKcolor to replace/supplement my original eBookwise. Hubster bought his own NOOKcolor so we don't have to share.

  2. I got a Kindle for Christmas, and I've noticed that it's actually helped to increase the amount of reading that I'm doing.

  3. I have an iPad, and boy howdy do I read infinitely more on that thing than I have managed to since MIDDLE school. Nothing like being able to carry around one device for everything.

  4. When they first came out I didn't want one, but the more I saw the more I wanted. And then when my daughter was born last year it was so hard to juggle holding her and reading a traditional book. My nook (chose that one because I can borrow from friends and library and I'm in control of my library not Amazon) is awesome. I regret a little not waiting for the nook color, but what I have is great, I adore it!

  5. No, I don't own an e-reader, post-Christmas. But I did buy one, so there is one more e-reader-user in the world today because of me.

  6. Wow. I feel read outdated. My hubby said he'd gotten me 100 books for Christmas, and I couldn't wait! Kindle, here we come. No. He got me a collection to read on the Nintendo DS. Seriously?

  7. I have an ereader but you might want to add one option: mobile phone apps. My husband doesn't have an ereader, nor does he want one until the new iPad comes out but he is definitely reading digitally on his phone daily.

  8. I'm a total Nookie and love it. And yes, I still own and read physical books, too. There's room for both in my world. By I love the ease, convenience, and the idea that I can pack up my apartment that much more easily and run off with George Clooney that an e-reader affords. :)

  9. I've had my Kindle since last spring (birthday present from my husband). When I showed it to my mother, she said, "Oh, does this mean you're going to get rid of all your hardcover and paperback books?" Hardly! I think she just wanted some of my hardcover collection, and some of my bookshelves. I like my Kindle, but I have to say, I still get most of my books from the library. Kindle reads have mainly been a.) free classics, and b.) brand-new releases that I just couldn't wait to get at the bookstore.

Over the past few months, friends who had no idea what a Kindle WAS at this time last year have now either gotten a Kindle or a color Nook of their own.

  10. I don't own an e-reader. I hope to, eventually. But I do use e-reader software from both Amazon and Barnes & Noble on my computer.

  11. Does Kindle for Mac count. I don't own an actual ereader but I read a lot of ebooks.

  12. I own a Sony Reader, but right now I'm reading a paperback...oh how I miss my Reader!!!!!

  13. I love my Kindle. I got it in November and although I can't say that my reading has increased (as I read books for a living) it has made purchasing and carting around said books much easier.

  14. Got a nook wifi as a Christmas present. I'm happy with it. Yay! But I should mention that I've been reading on my laptop for a while now and still love physical books.

  15. I have one now because my parents thought I should. But I love me a good book. It's not the same to me--holding a piece of hardware and reading.

  16. I'm actually using my NOOKcolor to read and type this right now, which delights me far more than it probably should.

  17. No but I need to buy one! Especially now my book is up *grin* and guess what! I got my first Amazon review and it's a whopping 5 stars!! Woooohoooo!

Yeah really must buy a kindle now ;p

  18. My husband got me a nook for Christmas, last year. I feel conflicted about it and I haven't used it as much as I could have (half of the books I read are still on paper).

E-readers are incredibly convenient and I do enjoy reading off it. On the other hand, I am concerned about the impact of this technology on bookstores and on the publishing industry. Frequenting bookstores is by far my favorite pastime and as they close down, they will in turn, affect the industry as a whole.

Alas, we are not strangers to adapting to a new reality, right? The closing of all music stores have affected how we shop for music but, music itself is still alive and well.

I might have had an epiphany just now. I guess, I'll start using my nook more often...

Who knew? Pimp my Novel can be informative and cathartic to boot!

  19. It won't take my vote. I would have voted that I don't own one but I may oneday. They would have to dramatically lower the price of ebooks before I would buy one. Most books I would buy would be ones I already own and love, so I see no reason to have to pay so much for books I have already purchased.

  20. I have a Sony, and I love it! At the same time, though, I'll never give up printed books. There should be an option in the poll for that. Book love all around, in all forms :)

  21. I own an iPad, and I find that, since I've been carrying it around (instead of or in addition to a "real book"), I'm actually reading less. A tablet computer makes so many things easier to do, wherever you are, that reading has much more competition.

But I do have four e-reader apps on it, with stacks of books on each. I've read a few books on it -- it's particularly good for graphic novels/comics.

  22. Bought myself a Kindle in Oct. and didn't open it until Christmas. How pitiful is that.

Best thing is being able to take so many books in a slim pocket of my purse. Still read paper books and love audio although not the Kindle reading aloud version.

Thanks to the lower price of ebooks, I am buying best sellers I would have had to go on a wait list for at the library--outstanding for seniors on a fixed income.

  23. I actually WON an iPad in a raffle right before Christmas. I did not consider buying one, but now that I have it, I don't know how (or why) I did without it. If someone took it away, I'd march right out and plop down the $600 to get a new one. Love it. I bought 3 books in the first week.

  24. I got a Kindle for Christmas and have read one book on it so far. I really like it, which surprised me!

  25. I got a Kindle for Christmas. Totally converted. I'll likely still buy some print books for special purposes, but I'm in love with my Kindle and how fast and easy it is to read on it.

  26. I reluctantly bought a kindle for myself in November, figuring it was really time to stop being such a durned luddite. Love it. Really surprised how much I love it. I still buy and read plenty of paper books, but I can just as easily read a kindle book. It's both, not either/or.

  27. I was one of those people that didn't have an e-reader and wasn't planning on getting one any time soon.

I got a Kobo for Christmas. :) I don't plan to stop buying print books until they stop making them, but I'm really excited to try my Kobo out.

  28. While I don't own an official ereader, I do have the free kindle app on my phone.
